General Description of the Graduate Program

Undergraduate Preparation
Students who have earned a bachelor's degree in physical, chemical, biological, or agricultural sciences at an accredited college or university are eligible to apply to UCR's graduate program in biochemistry and molecular biology . Students should have taken the following courses prior to beginning graduate study in biochemistry: one year of calculus; one year of general physics; one year of organic chemistry; an introductory course in physical chemistry; and at least two courses in biology at the upper division level including genetics. If 2-3 courses have not been completed before entering the program, students should plan to make up deficiencies soon after entering graduate school.
Academic Advising for Entering Graduate Students
For the first quarter in residence, the Admissions Committee, composed of three faculty members, advises each student. This faculty committee provides guidance to the new student in course selection and in any other matters that will later become the responsibility of the student's research advisor.
