For educational and research computer applications, the Computing Center operates a DEC VAX cluster consisting of a VAX 8820 and VAX 6310 running the VMS operating system. In addition, UCR has a local connection to the San Diego Supercomputer CRAY MP48 and is an affiliate member of the National Center for Supercomputer Applications located at the University of Illinois in Urbana. The campus also has a large Ethernet network from which the VAX cluster and supercomputers may be accessed. High speed line printers and magnetic tape drives are attached to the VAX cluster and located centrally. Microcomputers are available in several centralized campus facilities as well as in the libraries and dormitories. In addition to the excellent computer environment, computing is very available and free to student users.
